Product Hunt gallery images
A launch gallery is read in about four seconds of scrolling. The first image decides whether there is a fifth.
The size
1270 × 760
- 1270 × 760 for gallery images — roughly 5:3.
- The thumbnail is 240 × 240, square, cropped from the middle.
- The first gallery image is what shows in the feed. Lead with it.
Make the set look like a set
The most common failure in a launch gallery is not a bad image, it is six images that do not look related — different backgrounds, different angles, different light.
Apply one style to every shot and change only the screenshot. Because a style here is a complete document — camera, background, lighting, blur, border — applying the same one twice gives you two images that share everything except the content.
Front-load the story
The first image carries into the feed, so it should show the product doing its most recognisable thing. Save detail shots for later in the gallery, where someone has already decided to look.
A tilted three-quarter view reads as 'product' faster than a flat screenshot, which reads as 'documentation'.
Mind the square thumbnail
The 240 × 240 thumbnail is cut from the centre of your image, not scaled from it. A composition that pushes the subject to one side loses it entirely at thumbnail size.
Both sizes are in the Social list, so the quickest check is to export the same scene twice and look at the small one. If the thumbnail still reads, the gallery image certainly will.
Launch day is not the day to be inventing this
Galleries get made at midnight before a launch, which is why so many of them are raw screenshots. The way out is to set the look once, early, and treat it as a template: one style applied to whatever screenshots exist on the day.
Because a project here saves locally and reopens with everything intact, you can build the first image a week ahead and spend launch morning swapping the screenshot rather than rebuilding the scene.
Questions
- What size are Product Hunt gallery images?
- 1270 × 760. The thumbnail is a separate 240 × 240 square, cropped from the centre of the image.
- How many images should a launch have?
- Enough to show the product working, usually four to six. Past that, people scroll rather than look.
